CAT Bendix DF-596 Air Compressor

CAT Bendix DF-596 Air Compressor

A high-output, 27 CFM reciprocating compressor engineered for Caterpillar-powered logging equipment. Designed specifically for the high-cycle pneumatic demands of tower haulers and yarders. Features the Bendix Energy Saving System (ESS) to reduce parasitic engine load during idling and a water-cooled head to prevent carbon buildup during sustained uphill pulls. Flange-mounted and gear-driven for Cat 3406, C12, and C15 engines.

CAT Bendix DF-596 Air Compressor

The CAT Bendix DuraFlo 596 (DF-596) is a high-capacity, two-cylinder reciprocating air compressor specifically engineered for heavy-duty Caterpillar engine applications. Known for its Energy Saving System (ESS), this unit significantly reduces power consumption and oil carryover when in the unloaded mode.
In yarding operations, air demand is intermittent but extreme. The DF-596 is built to recover system pressure rapidly after multiple clutch engagements or brake releases. Its 27 CFM delivery ensures that even with large-diameter pneumatic lines typical of North American and New Zealand haulers, there is no “lag” in control response.

Technical Specifications

  • Model: DuraFlo 596™ (DF-596)

  • Application: Caterpillar 3406, C10, C12, C15, C16 (Common in Madill & Thunderbird)

  • Rated Displacement: 27 CFM @ 1250 RPM

  • Cooling: Water-cooled (Cylinder Head) / Air-cooled (Crankcase)

  • Drive Type: Engine Gear Driven (Flange Mount)

  • System Feature: Energy Saving System (ESS) for reduced fuel consumption when “holding” on the landing.

Forestry & Logging Benefits

  • Thermal Management: The water-cooled head is essential for haulers working in steep terrain where engine compartment temperatures remain high for extended periods. This prevents oil “coking” in the discharge lines.

  • Durability: Cast iron crankcase construction withstands the constant vibration and jarring associated with heavy timber extraction and landing moves.

  • Energy Efficiency: The ESS unloader system reduces the horsepower draw from the Cat engine when the air tanks are at pressure, allowing more power to be directed to the main drums during the pull.

  • Field Serviceable: Designed for easy access to unloader kits and gaskets, minimizing downtime during the logging season.

Compatibility & Installation Note

For forestry applications, ensure the SV-1 Synchro Valve is inspected during installation. This valve is required to properly trigger the ESS system on the DF-596. Failure to use a synchro valve in a hauler environment can lead to premature unloader wear and system pressure fluctuations.
